Rather than being built with a separate top, sides, and back like most ukuleles, the body of the AU starts as a solid block of wood and is routed out, so that the back and sides are a single piece of wood. A top is then added to complete the body. This construction method gives these instruments a unique sound and brilliant playability. They also utilize distinctive features such as a Stereo Sound Port, Elevated Comfort Armrest, and Edgeless Comfort Heel.
